Conservation Commission reviews wetlands setbacks for Merrimac Road subdivision

Conservation Commission · Meeting of April 22, 2026

NH NEWTON — Newton Conservation Commission conducts site walk for proposed Merrimac Road subdivision. The commission inspected the property at 11 Merrimac Road, where homeowner Shamus Quirk proposed a two-lot subdivision with a 700-foot driveway at 12 feet wide. Commission members Robert Zalenski and Trisha McCarthy noted that National Fire Protection Association regulations may require the driveway to be wider for emergency access, potentially conflicting with the town's 50-foot wetlands buffer.

The commission stated no conservation concerns with the current 12-foot width if plans do not change, but will require a soil scientist's report and final plans before recommending approval to the Planning Board or Zoning Board of Adjustment.
