NH NEWTON — Newton Board of Selectmen hosts public hearing on eight-year $500,000 land acquisition plan for future town facilities. Road Agent Mike Pivero presented a proposed 2026 warrant article to purchase 7.74 acres at 8 Merrimac Road, financed without interest, to enable future construction of a new library and town hall. The Gale Library cannot comply with handicap accessibility regulations and the town clerk's office faces structural limitations.
Selectman Daniel Guide outlined payment terms: initial $100,000 payment with subsequent annual $50,000 payments. Laura McDougall of Friends of the Gale Library supported the plan and called for improved public communication. Public comment included support from Julia Fitzgerald and concerns from Alice Dunn about taxation and school costs.
